La dame aux camélias is one of the cornerstones of John Neumeier’s choreographic
work and an example of his penchant for narrative full-evening creations and of his
conception of contemporary dramatic ballet. Neumeier draws his inspiration from the novel by Alexandre Dumas fils, written in a rush in 1848, a few months after the death of
Marie Duplessis (whose story inspired Verdi to create La traviata), and not from its stage
adaptation by the same author. The intense and refined choreography builds the dramatic
climax on the poignant notes by Chopin through splendid pas-de-deux, great dance scenes and important moments for soloists, and a splendid, meticulous, almost “Viscontian” scenic apparatus. Theodor Guschlbauer, an expert of the French repertoire, conducts the La Scala Academy Orchestra.
