The successful meta-theatrical experiment by the duo Richard Strauss–Hugo von Hofmannstahl returns in the production created by Sven-Eric Bechtolf for the Salzburg Festival. It was later developed for the Vienna Opera in elegant eighteenth-century settings with carefully detailed interpretations ranging between realism, irony, and mythological evocations. Krassimira Stoyanova shines as Ariadne but the remarkable cast also features two major debuts: Erin Morley as Zerbinetta and Stephen Gould as Bacchus.
