La Scala has put the new production of Offenbach’s masterpiece under the musical guidance of Frédéric Chaslin, conductor, composer, and scholar who is an expert on the score and complex, multi-layered story of this opera fantastique. Automatons, black magic, Venetian nights, and other Hoffmannian enchantments and visions are transformed into theatre by Davide Livermore and Giò Forma’s team of set designers. Vittorio Grigolo lends his charisma to the protagonist, the three facets of Stella are Federica Guida, Eleonora Buratto, and Francesca Di Sauro, and Ildar Abdrazakov imbues the four diabolical characters with his allure.
